Plan Now, Renovate Right

Planning a kitchen renovation can feel daunting — but with the right steps in place, it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re dreaming of a full reconfiguration or just want to refresh the heart of your home, the key to a stress-free transformation is knowing where to start.

At Greenwood Kitchens, we guide clients through every stage of the journey — from the very first ideas to the final fit. We manage the entire process in-house, and that means our clients have a single point of contact throughout. That’s less stress, fewer surprises, and a beautifully designed kitchen that works hard every day.

But how do you know when it’s the right time to renovate? And what should you think about before you even book a consultation? We’ve created this blog — and a handy checklist — to help you reflect, plan and take confident steps forward.

How to Know When You’re Ready

Start by taking a good look at how you use your kitchen now. Is it a space that works with your lifestyle — or one that holds you back? Think about:

  • Are you constantly battling clutter or running out of prep space?
  • Do you avoid cooking because your layout is awkward or inefficient?
  • Is your kitchen worn, outdated, or no longer in keeping with the rest of your home?
  • Have there been life changes — like a new baby, older kids moving out, or a switch to working from home — that affect how you use the space?

If you’re nodding to any of the above, it might be time to rethink the layout, design or functionality of your kitchen. And that starts with some practical planning.

What to Expect From the Process

When you work with Greenwood Kitchens, we make it easy to go from “just thinking” to “ready to go.” Here’s how it typically works:

1. Book your design consultationWe visit you in your home to understand your space, how you use it, and what you want to achieve. We take accurate measurements and talk through layout possibilities.

2. We create your bespoke designYou’ll receive a detailed design tailored to your needs, preferences and budget — including cabinetry, appliances, surfaces, lighting, and layout.

3. We walk through the proposal with youWe’ll go over your bespoke design together — covering the layout, materials and timeline — so everything’s clear. It’s your chance to ask questions, make changes, and be confident the plan suits your home and how you live.

4. Once approved, we order and fitYour project will be managed by our experienced in-house team, so you can sit back, relax, and get on with daily life while we bring your vision to life.

We take the pressure off so you can focus on the fun bits — like picking your colours, handles, and finishes!

Your Kitchen Renovation Checklist

⏹️ Identify the problems with your current kitchen

What frustrates you most? Lack of storage, poor lighting, awkward layout? Make a note of what’s not working.

⏹️ Define what your new kitchen needs to do

Do you need space to cook with family, room to entertain, somewhere for kids to do homework, or better access to the garden?

⏹️ List who uses the kitchen and how

Think about each household member — from early-morning coffee drinkers to teenagers making toast to pets waiting for dinner!

⏹️ Decide what kind of storage you need

Pantry cupboards? Pull-out larders? Somewhere to stash air fryers or mixers? Match storage to your lifestyle and appliances.

⏹️ Research layout options that fit your space

Galley, L-shape, U-shape or open-plan with island — each has pros and cons depending on your home’s footprint and your preferences.

⏹️ Consider how your kitchen connects to other areas

Does your kitchen flow well into dining or living areas? Is it open plan or separate? Will changes affect other rooms?

⏹️ Think about what’s most important to you – aesthetics, practicality, budget, sustainability

What are your non-negotiables? Prioritise where to spend and where to save.

⏹️ Set a ballpark budget

Consider not just cabinetry and appliances, but fitting, flooring, lighting, extraction and contingency.

⏹️ Get realistic about timings – when do you want the kitchen ready?

Some lead times are longer than you think — allow time for planning, ordering and fitting, especially around holidays.

⏹️ Decide whether you’re planning a full renovation or smaller refresh

A full reconfiguration or an upgrade to surfaces and finishes? Be clear about the scale of your project.

⏹️ Be open to new ideas and expert input

Designers may suggest alternatives you haven’t considered that work better for your space.

⏹️ Make space in your calendar for a consultation

Block out time for your in-person consultation — we’ll walk through your ideas, measure up and help shape your vision.

If a new kitchen is on your wishlist, don’t wait for the “perfect” moment. With a bit of planning — and the right people by your side — it’s absolutely possible to create a space that feels just right.
